In Judo, the adult is not using strikes. Instead, he is manipulating the bodyweight of the opponent to throw him on the ground. Randori shouldn’t be underestimated because, in comparison to other martial arts, the Judoka is experiencing a real-life situation, where he is pressurized to execute the right techniques at the right time. Whoever has gained more experience inside the Dojo by participating in various randori sessions, is confident and knowledgeable in dealing with life-threatening situations outside the dojo. This can be seen as as an important benefit of Judo for adults.

Judo etiquette

In Judo, the student needs to adhere to certain principles that he will also carry outside the dojo. One of these principles is to show respect towards your Sensei and your partner. As part of the Judo program, the student can only learn the techniques, if he listens to the instructions of his Sensei and is willing to cooperate with his partner.

From the first time the student enters the Dojo, he is expected to show and learn the proper etiquette. As one of the most important principles, the student must perform a “Ritsu Rei”, whenever he enters or exits the Dojo. Important to mention is that the standing bow is not just a physical thing. It is also mental.

This means that the student is expected to clear his mind of all negative thoughts. Only then the student can open himself to the new techniques and become a better person for what they are about to learn inside the Dojo.

Once the student enters the Dojo, he needs to learn to respect his fellow Athens. In addition, the student needs to humble himself. While learning the techniques through the help of his partner, the student is also expected to being helpful to others when they want to learn new techniques. Adhering to these principles clearly show the benefits of doing Judo for character building.

Inside the Dojo, the student learns courage, honesty, respect, and endurance. Those qualities are important and useful in daily life as well. For those that practice Judo many years, Judo has already become part of their personality. Even if they don’t recognize it, Judo has already developed a part of their character. Thus, the student and Judo become a symbiotic unity.
